WHY DO WE KEEP WATCHING?

TV is rotting our brains.  I fully believe it.  Today they have on shows like dance moms -- a show that isn’t even about the dancers it’s about their mothers and the drama that goes on between the mothers.  Another popular show was Jersey Shore and I am unhappy to say I have watched ten whole, IQ-draining minutes watching it.  During those ten wonderful minutes: five were literally just dramatic cuts from one pouty girl’s face with twenty pounds of make-up on it to another girl’s angry face -- also -- with twenty pounds of make-up on it.  The remaining five minutes was devoted to a girl screaming over the phone at her boyfriend for something he clearly didn’t do.  I couldn’t believe that people actually cared about these stupid people’s lives.  The people in those shows were some of the stupidest I had ever seen.  These “reality” TV shows are dulling our minds and are completely useless.
These amazingly unimaginative “reality” TV shows, sadly, have millions of devoted viewers.  What is the point of watching these shows?  Usually they are centered around average people, trashy people, or just plain idiots; and, the show is about the things they do and the the thoughts they have while doing them.  So the viewers are watching and intently listening to the opinions and the unimportant drama in these dumber-than-dirt people.  The viewers could experience their own unimportant drama if they really wanted to, but why watch hours of television on something that isn’t original and something that the viewer themselves could easily do.  It’s easy to understand why people watch shows like the Amazing Race, where people travel all over the world and do interesting challenges like eat snakes or skydive.  That is one of the amazing things about tv: that millions of average people can watch dangerous, exciting, or expensive things that otherwise the viewers would have no way of remotely experiencing.  However, more and more of these shows are being replaced with these “reality” TV shows that are obviously scripted and are incredibly boring.
Even though, to me, it makes no sense whatsoever why someone would watch something on TV that they could do themselves, I do understand why most of Americans have become comatose vegetables on their couch absorbing in television shows like sponges.  TV is cheap, fast, and requires no effort at all.  It takes less brain power to watch a television show than it does to sleep.   Because of how brainless and easy it is, it has trapped billions of people to just watch hour after hour after hour of it.  Even if the viewer does not particularly like any of the TV shows on at the moment, they will still settle for something just to watch TV.  Even if absolutely nothing interesting is on, it has come to the point where people will not turn away from their TV. If the viewers stopped to think about it, they may see how pointless and unsatisfying it is to sit like a zombie for hours staring at a screen and barely using their brains.  It is so much more fulfilling to read a book, paint, play a sport, even sleep!  Really, about anything is better than just mindlessly watching TV.
